In Memoriam
Virginia "Ginnie" Moses Hunsaker '52, a longtime Trustree of the University of Redlands and Delta sister, died in her sleep on January 3, 2021 at her home in Corona del Mar.
Ginnie's dedicated service and lifelong commitment to her alma mater, through her gifts of time, talent and treasure, are unparalleled. She, and husband Rich, benefitted the University with nearly seven decades of faithful philanthropy, beginning with their intial modest contribution of $25 following their graduation and including their transformational gift of $35 million (the single largest in the University's history) to create the Hunsaker Scholarship Prize.
Ginnie and Rich met as first-year students through their leadership roles in the Associated Students of the University of Redlands (ASUR). Ginnie was freshman class secretary and Rich, freshman class president. With a degree in general education, Ginnie taught kindergarten in her early post-Redlands years and later focused her efforts on serving the community.
Ginnie's words when she was interviewed by Och Tamale magazine in 2015 speak to the couple's selfless and gracious approach to philanthropy: "Giving is a personal thing. I wouldn't tell someone to give their last cent to anyone...they might need it. Wanting to give, that's what's important. When you want to give, you find a way."
Sadly, Ginnie's beloved husband Rich, a Pi Chi, followed her in death just nine days after her passing, marking the end of an era at the University. The Husaker's spirit and vision will continue to be felt through the many scholarships, endowed faculty positions, student research opportunities and the numerous locations on campus their generosity touched including the Hunsaker University Center.
